Driving Innovation at ITS Australia Summit 2025

SAGE Group was proud to be part of the ITS Australia Summit on the Gold Coast last week.

The Summit gathered industry leaders, innovators and policymakers to explore the next generation of ITS and how smarter, safer and more sustainable transport systems would shape Australia’s future.

It was a valuable opportunity to exchange insights on connected and automated vehicles, smart mobility, traffic management and digital infrastructure, and to strengthen connections with partners committed to lifting transport outcomes nationwide.

A highlight was seeing Paloma Vega and Christian Chong-White, Principals at Nukon, deliver two strong, forward-thinking sessions:

Unlocking AI’s Potential in Transport: Accelerating Safer Incident Response

AI is transforming how transport networks are managed, not just through technology, but through strategy.

At the ITS Australia Summit 2025, Paloma Vega explored how introducing AI into Traffic Incident Management Systems could reshape the operational strategy, coordination and resilience of control centres managing tunnels and roads.

Paloma has spent the last decade delivering major transport projects across NSW, with a strong focus on Operations and Maintenance Control Systems (OMCSs), from defining Concepts of Operations to developing system requirements, leading design, testing, commissioning and supporting transition to operations.

Over the past two years at Nukon, Paloma has been focused on asset management and condition monitoring systems, helping clients bridge the gap between digital systems and operational outcomes.

Her presentation, “Unlocking AI’s Potential in Transport: Accelerating Safer Incident Response,” examined how AI could evolve from a simple advisory tool to a fully integrated decision-support engine that enabled faster, more consistent and safer incident responses across complex networks.

The session highlighted the strategic and operational impacts of adopting AI in incident management, from fragmented systems to unified, data-driven operations, and from reactive decisions to intelligent, coordinated responses.

Movement Control Will Reshape Adaptive Signal Systems in Australia

Christian Chong-White introduced Group Control (Movement Control), a first for Australia, enabling individual control of each traffic movement rather than traditional phases.

This approach delivers up to 47% improvement in signal optimisation, reduces stops and emissions, and enhances intersection safety, all without new infrastructure.

These sessions underscored a powerful message: the future of transport isn’t just about technology, it’s about creating safer journeys, cleaner cities, and more connected communities.

At SAGE Group, we’re proud to stand at the forefront of this transformation, partnering with industry to turn innovation into impact and deliver smarter, greener mobility for all Australians.
