See Me Bus Signaling app wins 2025 ITS Australia Intelligent Mobility Award

A ground-breaking accessibility app that improves the passenger experience and enables more independent travel was recognised at the 15th annual ITS Australia awards dinner in Perth.

Developed by SAGE Group's Cassie Hames, the See Me app allows users to hail a bus remotely and then notifies the user when the bus is approaching, and when it is about to reach the end destination.

See Me triggers notifications to the bus driver, either using the bus “bell” system or with a visual notification on a built-in display. With this method, both the driver is informed that they need to pull over, and the user is updated via the app with spoken, visual, and haptic notifications.

Trials of the app are currently running on select bus services in Adelaide, with trials previously completed in New South Wales and Queensland.

iMOVE - the national centre for transport and smart mobility R&D in Australia - has partnered with SAGE on a number of trials and would like to have the See Me app trialled within every state and territory in Australia to understand localised issues for the blind and vision-impaired community using public transport. iMOVE Australia helped to support the development and reach of See Me, through the Impact Extension Program.

Increasing accessibility for public transport users

The See Me app represents a significant step towards inclusive transport by enabling easier public transport use so that passengers can travel with confidence and ensure that no one is left behind.

A member of the Smart Cities team at SAGE Group, Cassie has been hands-on with every aspect of developing See Me and the supporting hardware. A frequent public transport user herself, Cassie’s perspective of navigating public transport informs the development of See Me, as she understands first-hand the need for accessible services.

During her acceptance speech, Cassie described the app as much more than ‘just a project’, highlighting that she had personally been dreaming about having access to a solution like this for more than 15 years. Speaking from her own experience, Cassie explained that in addition to being dangerous, being left behind at a bus stop was frustrating, embarrassing and isolating. This is what gave her the drive to change the public transport experience for the better.

“I'm delighted that See Me was announced as the winner of the Intelligent Mobility Award, it's fantastic recognition from the industry, particularly in a very strong category," said Cassie

"See Me was created on the principles of inclusion and making public transport accessible for everyone. The idea for See Me came from my own experience of using public transport, and the input of many people who rely on public transport but find it challenging.

My hope is that See Me has demonstrated how considering and including other perspectives can enrich our community and drive innovation in our industry. I'm fortunate to work with a team that takes these learnings and applies them to future projects, because regardless of ability, we should all be able to feel confident and safe when catching public transport.”

What's next for See Me?

Further development for See Me is continuing, with upcoming releases enabling push notifications outside of the app (so users are updated about their trip status even when not actively using the app), and a stop countdown. The stop countdown will help passengers to have a clear understanding of their journey’s progress.
